Central Coast Waldorf School is seeking a skilled and inspiring String Orchestra Conductor to lead our vibrant and growing orchestral program of violins, violas, cellos and basses. This is a part-time position working with motivated students and a highly supportive parent community. The ideal candidate brings both strong musicianship and a deep appreciation for child development, ensemble pedagogy, and the values of Waldorf education.

Central Coast Waldorf School is a vibrant school with 100 children, from preschool through 8th grade. We are a 17-year-old school with healthy enrollment, strong community support and we are certified by WECAN and AWSNA. We offer specialty programs in Spanish, Math, Handwork, Movement, Strings Ensemble, and Education Support. Location: Our school is located in Los Osos, a charming bayside community just 15 minutes from San Luis Obispo. Families from surrounding coastal towns such as Morro Bay, Cayucos, Cambria, San Luis Obispo and greater San Luis Obispo county, make up our school community. The area offers abundant outdoor activities, including beach excursions, hiking, biking, surfing and exploration of a nearby state park. It is beautiful here!

 

Essential Job Duties

Schedule:

  • Teaching days: Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays 
  • Total of 6 classes per week (each 45 minutes) 
  • Classes meet twice weekly: 
  • Beginning Orchestra (4th Grade) 
  • Intermediate Orchestra (5th/6th Grade) 
  • Middle School Orchestra (7th/8th Grade) 

Responsibilities 

  • Plan and lead engaging, developmentally appropriate rehearsals for three orchestral levels 
  • Build foundational string technique, ensemble skills, and musicality across all grades
  • Select repertoire aligned with students’ abilities and the Waldorf approach to music education 
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and disciplined rehearsal environment 
  • Prepare students for performances and school events as needed (3 main performances per year) 
  • Communicate effectively with faculty and parents regarding student progress and program needs 
  • Support and sustain a strong culture of enthusiasm and commitment within the orchestra
  • Write progress reports for each student, 3 times per year (Nov., March, June)

Additional Opportunity 

  • Use of school facilities on Thursdays after school to offer private lessons (optional, independently arranged)

Employment Details

Position: Strings Orchestra Director
Type: Part-Time 6 classes/ week (M, W, Th) 45 min ea.
Pay: Highly Competitive hourly rate based on experience ($45 - $80/hour) 

Additional income potential through private lessons

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Experience conducting or teaching string ensembles (youth experience preferred)
  • Proficiency on a string instrument and strong understanding of string pedagogy
  • Ability to work with a range of skill levels, from beginner to intermediate and advanced
  • Strong classroom management and communication skills 
  • Ability to work with and engage middle school students 
  • Bachelor’s degree in music or related field (preferred) 
  • Interest in or openness to Waldorf education philosophy
